Always tired no matter how much you sleep? Discover the real root causes of fatigue—from stress and nutrient deficiencies to adrenal and thyroid imbalance—and how to restore energy naturally.
If you feel tired all the time—even when you’re eating well, trying to sleep more, and doing “all the right things”—you’re not alone.
And almost certainly, you’re not dealing with just one issue, which is why many practitioners in the conventional medical system may not have been able to help you.
Fatigue is rarely caused by a single problem. It’s usually the result of multiple systems in the body being slightly off at the same time. When those imbalances stack up, your energy drops—sometimes dramatically.
Energy Isn’t Just About Sleep
Most people assume your fatigue is the result of poor sleep. But true, lasting energy depends on several key systems working together:
A balanced stress response and adrenal health
Stable blood sugar
Strong nutrient status
Healthy thyroid function
Efficient digestion and absorption
Proper sleep
Chronic low-grade infections
When even one of these is off, you may feel a dip in energy. When several are off at once, fatigue becomes persistent.
Chronic Stress and the Energy Drain
Stress is one of the most overlooked causes of fatigue—especially because it often becomes “normal.”
When your body is under constant pressure, it produces more Cortisol to help you cope. In the short term, that’s helpful. Over time, it becomes draining.
You might notice:
· Feeling tired in the morning but wired at night
· Energy crashes in the afternoon
· Difficulty relaxing, even when exhausted
This pattern is known as adrenal fatigue in Naturopathic medicine, and monitoring your cortisol levels throughout the day in a Salivary Hormone Test is the best way to really see what your adrenal glands are doing. Based on those test results, a variety of natural methods are able to support your adrenal glands and nervous system while you implement the lifestyle adjustments which while be required for your long term recovery. Remember it is NOT normal for people to be constantly tired.
Nutrient Deficiencies: The Missing Pieces of Energy
You can eat “healthy” and still feel depleted if your body isn’t getting—or absorbing—what it needs.
Some of the most common nutrient gaps linked to fatigue include:
Iron → supports oxygen delivery to your cells
B vitamins → essential for converting food into energy
Magnesium → supports relaxation, sleep, and muscle function
Protein → stabilizes blood sugar and fuels metabolism
Iodine supports your thyroid gland, as well as facilitating the absorption of ALL hormones in your body
Even mild deficiencies can leave you feeling:
Foggy
Sluggish
Unmotivated
And here’s the key: stress and poor digestion can increase your need for these nutrients, making the gap even wider.
Thyroid Function: Your Metabolic Engine
Your thyroid plays a central role in how your body produces and uses energy. The thyroid regulates your body’s baseline metabolism. With Hypothyroidism, everything can start to slow down—including your energy.
Common symptoms include:
Constant fatigue
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Cold sensitivity
Brain fog
Dry skin or hair thinning
And many others – ask your Naturopathic doctor.
One key issue is that your annual physical exam lab tests seldom look at enough of the parameters, usually only 2. A proper thyroid evaluation requires 8 different tests and they all need to be run from the same blood sample. Thyroid function is also intimately linked to your body temperature, and whether the thyroid hormones being produced are actually being absorbed by the organs that need it. Thyroid Hormone Resistance is a real phenomenon.
Blood Sugar Imbalance and Energy Crashes
If your energy feels like a rollercoaster throughout the day, blood sugar may be playing a role.
Signs of imbalance include:
Craving sugar or caffeine
Feeling shaky or irritable between meals
Mid-afternoon crashes
Needing something sweet after eating
Your body relies on steady blood sugar to create steady energy. When levels spike and drop, your energy follows. Solutions are often straightforward, usually requiring a through review of your food and nutrient intake, along with exercise programs. More advanced cases might be showing signs of early insulin resistance, and, big surprise, the “usual” annual physical exams don’t catch it! This is why the holistic Naturopathic approach has so many advantages in actually helping you become healthy.
Gut Health and Nutrient Absorption
It’s not just what you eat—it’s what your body can absorb and use.
If your digestion isn’t functioning optimally, you may not be fully absorbing key nutrients, even from a healthy diet. Some of the causes include:
Poor nutrient absorption
Low-grade inflammation
Imbalances in gut bacteria
Adverse reactions to foods
An old time Naturopathic adage says “when in doubt, heal the gut”. It is rare when complicated health situations don’t have something going on in the GI tract, and it is often the first place I need to start when working with patients with fatigue.
Where to Start
The goal isn’t to overhaul everything overnight. It’s to begin supporting the systems that create energy:
Proper hormonal testing for your Thyroid, Adrenal glands, and blood sugar
Get educated on proper nutrition; many of the videos available to members of the Dr. Cage Wellness Plan go into this in detail, from the privacy of your own home on your own schedule.
Reduce reliance on caffeine as a “crutch”
Support your body’s stress response with rest and recovery.
Adopt patterns of support for your mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life
Pay attention to patterns—not just symptoms
Small shifts, done consistently, can start to rebuild your energy in a meaningful way.
Sleep
Sleep difficulties are far too common in our modern life. Sleep is a normal biological activity that should just happen naturally and automatically. Sleep is required to reset our body’s parasympathetic nervous system – the opposite end of the spectrum from the fight or flight reactions. Many of the things discussed so far – adrenal, thyroid, nutrition, play a big role in sleep. A thorough holistic analysis of your health is where we start to work on correcting whatever may be interfering with your sleep.
Chronic, Low-Grade Infections
This is an often overlooked area for severe fatigue. It is in fact, the major difference between straightforward cases of hypothyroid or adrenal fatigue, and the more insidious cases of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Very often, there is a period of a severe cold or flu-like illness in someone’s past, followed by severe fatigue and “never better since”. Here in the mid 2020s, chronic fatigue seems to have been simply renamed “long covid”. Symptoms and treatments are virtually identical. This is a bit more complex, but again, treatment is usually straightforward with Naturopathic therapies.
If you’ve been struggling with ongoing fatigue, it may be time to look beyond the surface. While standard medical evaluations are important, they often focus on broad ranges and acute conditions—sometimes missing the more subtle imbalances that can still significantly impact how you feel day to day. A more comprehensive, naturopathic approach looks at the full picture, including hormones, nutrient status, stress patterns, and metabolic function. With the right testing and guidance, you can begin to uncover the true root causes of your fatigue and create a plan that’s tailored specifically to your body.
